The doctrine of the Seventh Day Adventists which states that Christ's return and the end of the world are near. Just how near, no one knows. The current guess is Y2K, and given the party planning all around the world to celebrate an essentially meaningless Thursday, it's certain that there will be a lot of rubbish in the streets to be cleared out on Friday. |

A doctrine formed by a composite of three sects of Vedantin Hinduism, founded by Sankaracharya, who was born about 60 years after Buddha's death. (Some believe Sankaracharya was the reincarnation of Buddha.) The basic Adwait doctrine states that Brahmum, the universal spirit, acts only through Prakrati (matter) and thus is a passive, incomprehensible, unconscious principle, as well as the essence of the universe. This is identical to the Transcendental Materialism of Esoteric Buddhism. |

From the Albigenses, a small religious sect in Albi, France, who opposed papal rule and were crushed by Pope Innocent III in the 12th century. They practiced various ascetic rituals, to purify themselves and invoke spiritual release. Of all the dualistic Christian sects of the later Middle Ages, this tribe was distinguished by the fact that they were thoroughly rubbed out. That's what happens when you oppose an Innocent. |

Belief in an absolutely literal reading of the Koran; the Muslim equivalent of Biblicism. Of course, hardline Islamic regimes go even further and make stuff up, and then call it Islamic law. For example, Saudi Arabia claims it's against Islamic law for women to drive cars. Well, first, there's nothing about driving in the Koran, and second, the book describes Mohammed's wives as businesswomen and warriors who piloted their own camels. |

The doctrine of Buddhism turned upside down. The word comes from the concept "of pure land," a place for the masses who cannot withdraw from the world (as elite religious aristocrats can) and devote themselves to meditation. A popular, democratic religion, it is said to resolve the tension between monastic and lay piety in Buddist life. Amitabha Buddhism represents a vast evolutionary distance from the historic Buddha, primarily in that it teaches redemption by a supernatural being.

The doctrines of the Church of England, the Protestant and Episcopal Church of Ireland, and occasionally the Episcopal church in the U.S. The originators broke from Catholic control at the insistence of John Knox (1505-1572), a Scottish religious reformer. Anglicans do not believe in Immaculate Conception, although they admit the existence of Original Sin. The movement gained legitimacy in Britain when Henry VIII rejected the Vatican because the Pope refused him a divorce from a queen who couldn't bear a son. Determined to have a male heir, he married Anne Boleyn, who promptly bore a daughter (Elizabeth I). |

A variation of iconoclasm ("breaking of icons") where anthropomorphism in the form of the worship of idols is prohibited, but nonrepresentational objects symbolic of a deity are venerated. Examples are the veneration of the Torah in Judaism, and the Kaaba in Islam. Neither of these are icons. |

The dogma of Antinomians, who maintained that under Gospel dispensation, the moral law set forth in the Bible is of no use and contains no obligation. Originating with John Agricola, around 1538, the sect believed that the church was subserviant only to the Gospel and that faith is the essential of salvation. The root word "antinomy" refers to antagonism between laws or principles; any law or rule that has an opposing law or rule in the same code of morality is invalid. |

The doctrines of Arius, a 4th century Greek theologian, who denied that Jesus was of the same substance as God, and held instead that Jesus was only the highest of created beings and that His purpose was to create a better world.

The doctrines of Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609) and his followers, who opposed the Calvinist doctrine of absolute Predestination. He maintained that your life is what you make of it and that no celestial script was written prior to your arrival. The Arminian sect flourished at the end of the 16th century and also believed in universal redemption, though none but believers could partake of the benefit of Christ's atonement. |

The doctrine of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo (354-430 A.D.), member of a monastic order who framed rules of conduct for religious and secular life. Many Catholic orders follow the rules of this monk in their practices -- such as vows of poverty, humility, charity, and celebacy. |

The worship of Baal, an ancient sun god of the people of Canaan and Phoenecia, whom the Hebrews considered a false idol. In general use, the term connotes any idolatry. Baal had many names: as Baal, he was popular with the Phoenecians. As Belus or Bel, he was served by the priest Berosus, who wrote the famous account of the Deluge. |

The doctrine of St Theresa of Barrhead (b. 1947) that teaches a person must exist and know that she exists, in order to actualize herself; to exist in actuality, to make real. In contrast to identity being vested in the having or doing of a job or role, Beism says one must experience her life without external or imposed definitions of who or what she is. |

An occult theosophy of rabbinical origin, widely transmitted in medieval Europe and based on an esoteric interpretation of Hebrew scriptures. This secret, esoteric science originated from the Chaldeans of the Middle East. The Book of Kabala, which outlines the origin of the universe, contains its tenets and is allegedly based on 70,000 years of recorded experience. |

Belief in the Christian doctrine that when blessed, the items of the Eucharist (usually, bread wafers and wine or juice) coexist with the body and blood of Jesus Christ. As Jesus was said to be both man and God, so wine is said to be both wine and blood. |

The multifarious practices of those who believe in demons, which are spirits for good or evil; in mythology, falling victim to an immaterial being, usually evil, holding a middle place between men and celestial beings. Though we think of demons as wicked, the ancient Greeks felt the presence of a "daimon" who gave them guidance and was a source of wisdom and goodness, like a muse. The Catholic Church absorbed these pagan beliefs, altered them slightly (took what was benevolent and made it evil), and continue to scare people with spirits said to require exorcism.
